Amazon Ventures into AI Smartphone Development
Amazon is reportedly working on a new smartphone, codenamed Transformer, over a decade after the Fire Phone's failure. The device aims to integrate AI and enhance shopping experiences.

Amazon is reportedly developing a new smartphone more than ten years after discontinuing its Fire Phone, according to a report from Reuters, which cited four anonymous sources familiar with the situation.
The device, codenamed Transformer, has not had its price, development costs, or projected revenue disclosed. As with any product still in the development phase, there is a possibility that Amazon may ultimately decide not to release the phone, potentially due to financial considerations or a shift in strategic direction.
When contacted for comment regarding the report, an Amazon spokesperson declined to provide further information.
Initially, Amazon explored the idea of a basic phone, but it is now focusing on a smartphone that centers around its own services. There is speculation that Alexa could function as the device's operating system, although details about its implementation remain unclear.
Amazon's team is reportedly aiming for the phone to facilitate easy shopping on Amazon and with partners like Grubhub, as well as to enable streaming from Prime Video and Prime Music.
According to sources, AI integration is a significant aspect of the Transformer project, with the goal of promoting the use of Amazon’s AI products. The phone may utilize AI to replace traditional app stores, drawing inspiration from the Light Phone, as noted by two of Reuters' sources.
While the report does not explicitly mention the generative AI version of Alexa, known as “Alexa+,” it is anticipated that this subscription-based assistant will play a crucial role in the goals for Transformer.
Amazon's renewed effort to enter the smartphone market comes after the discontinuation of the Fire Phone approximately 11 years ago, which lasted only about a year before being pulled from the market due to disappointing sales. Additionally, Amazon's devices division has faced financial obstacles for several years, primarily because Alexa-enabled devices have not generated significant revenue.
Reentering the smartphone market would place Amazon in competition with established leaders like Apple and Samsung, which dominate the industry with robust app ecosystems, innovative hardware, and loyal customer bases.
The rationale behind Amazon's decision to re-enter the smartphone market at this time remains unclear, as even competitively priced devices may struggle to attract consumer interest.
